Pagerwesi – 27 April
Similar to Saraswati, Pagerwesi is also celebrated every 210 days. The upcoming Pagerwesi will fall on 27 April. Pagerwesi, which means “iron fence”, is a day when people strengthen their fortification against evil.
Pagerwesi is dedicated to honour Siva, the God manifestation as Sanghyang Pramesi Guru (God as the Supreme Teacher). Falling three days after Saraswati Day, Pagerwesi and Saraswati Days have close connection. After people receive knowledge on Saraswati day, Pagerwesi is the day to show respect to the teacher and the main Guru (God or Siva). Moreover, knowledge (commemorated on Saraswati day) is powerful and should be protected from bad influence (Pagerwesi).
Offerings are made to the Almighty and the spirit of each family’s ancestors. Prayers are held at family compounds and family temple shrines as well as at village temples throughout the island.
