“You cannot breach the darkness,” are the deep, growled words spilling through the voice-boxes of possessed individuals in Commander Shepard’s path. Within minutes of starting the several hour, $10 adventure, it becomes painfully clear that what you are hunting does not wish to be found, even while harboring immense power.
The primary charm of the Leviathan DLC for Mass Effect 3 (besides the story advancement) is the change of pace from the rest of the game. Much of your time will be spent looking for clues, piecing together information, enjoying the story unfolding around you and taking in long sought after back-story on the Reapers. Much like the From Ashes DLC, Leviathan integrates quite nicely with the rest of the game, feeling like a natural addition in the quest to stop the Reapers.
Combat was noticeably downplayed, and even when present, a variety of objective-based moments are injected to keep it interesting. Even still, it was merely filler, and added little to nothing to the experience. BioWare could have easily stretched the experience on even longer, but thankfully they focused on the story driven content, sweeping the player from one revelation to another.
Over the course of several locations and sub-missions, the story is not told to you, but shown, like all the best gaming experiences are. Along the way you pick up bits and pieces of what the Leviathan is and what it can do, and meet several interesting characters while doing so. There are a number of new upgrades and weapons to acquire (the omni-blade bayonet weapon attachment arguably being the coolest), but they are merely a sideshow beside the mission to track down the elusive beast, whom clearly holds no love for the Reapers.
From a lab on the Citadel to a Tungsten mine to a vast water-world, Leviathan will keep you clipping along at a solid pace. But, you never feel rushed or short-changed by the experience, because each new clue and revealed location urges you onto the next frontier.
While From Ashes added a new crew mate in Javik, and filled in much of the back-story of the Protheans, and Lair of the Shadow Broker completed an important chapter in Liara’s story, Leviathan does not have an immediate emotional tie-in. This is a weak point, but Leviathan serves as an entirely different type of DLC. It plays out like a mystery novel, something like a film noir in space. And, the pay-off is more than satisfactory.
Though $10 may seem a bit steep for a few hours of game-play, those invested in the series and the story will undoubtedly find much to love in Leviathan. I found myself very pleased with the wealth of information provided on the history of the Reapers, and the final moments of the adventure were some of the coolest and most enlightening in the series. I’ve lived to tell the tale, and I’m telling you, you can and should ‘breach the darkness’.
